Former jesters Fred and George donвЂ™t have a lot to smile about, and erstwhile face puller Ron grew out of screaming like a girl a couple of films back. In fact, thereвЂ™s little room for comedy at all in this one. Yates and Rowling wisely sent the Dursleys packing early on in the last film, so thereвЂ™s no room for the seventies sitcom farce which opened the first three instalments. Unlike the exciting broomstick flight opening to Part 1, this time around, things are much quieter and more contemplative. Picking up where Part 1 left off, Part 2 opens with the adventure magnet trio recovering at Shell Cottage, before taking the next step in their plan to defeat Voldemort.

A fluid tracking shot following Harry, Ron and Hermione across the battlefield is used to good effect, as are shots of the teaming hordes of baddies congregating on a rocky outcrop and a fairly special bridge collapse. ItвЂ™s no real disservice to Part 2 to say it doesnвЂ™t quite capture the scale of battle achieved in, say, Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, despite hitting a few of the same marks. ItвЂ™s a fitting war palette for the war film of the series. Instead of gaily tripping through the courtyard with Quidditch and chocolate frogs on their minds, the students are now being marched around their dismal surroundings in formation under the watchful eyes (do Dementors have eyes?) of Dementors and Death Eaters.Д®duardo Serra, director of photography on these last two pictures, renders the once jolly castle in austere greys and muted tones, splashing the screen with danger red when battle commences. Without revealing too much, itвЂ™s safe to say that the Hogwarts of the two Deathly Hallows films is a very different place from the site of childish rivalries and comedy curses with which Chris Columbus began the series. Some will, no doubt, enjoy the extra dimension (just as Warner Bros will, no doubt, enjoy the extra moolah it generates), but I wouldnвЂ™t have thought youвЂ™d be missing out should you prompt to go for a glasses-free 2D screening. You might question the logic of converting a film with such a sombre palette into 3D, but a colour-saturated childhood flashback sequence and some mightily impressive cursed fire came across a treat. The talented David Yates, as we suspected he might, resisted any urge to have wands jutting out in the audienceвЂ™s faces every five minutes. Yates handles these important and intimate scenes with the same breathless urgency he gives the apocalyptic blitzkrieg at Hogwarts Castle.IвЂ™ll say now that the 3D wasnвЂ™t overplayed either.

Our heroes behave as heroes should when facing likely death: with courage, resignation, quiet grief. But the richness of this final 'Potter' has less to do with its central plotline than the conclusive heft of the thing, the accumulated dramatic weight of beloved characters finally and forcefully realizing their long-promised destinies. If Harry destroys the Horcruxes, he can kill Voldemort, too - unless Voldemort kills him first. It then catches up with Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and best buds Ron ( Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) on their quest to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes, which, for the uninitiated, are receptacles that hide fragments of Voldemort's soul.

It's also the simplest, offering a straightforward, thrill-a-minute capper to one of the fantasy realm's longest and most convoluted plots.ДЄdapted briskly and faithfully by Steve Kloves (who wrote all but the fifth Potter screenplay), the movie jumps right in where the last one ended - with Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes) acquisition of the all-powerful Elder Wand. At two hours and 10 minutes, it's the shortest. 'Deathly Hallows 2' is the first Potter installment to expand beyond two dimensions. And the 3-D conversion job is the finest I've ever seen. Followers of the movies probably have a good idea, too, but knowing what happens in this, the eighth and last film adaptation - the fourth straight directed by David Yates - doesn't lessen the wallop. Rowling's seven-book magnum opus already know how it ends. Ten years ago, the Potter lad was a flop-topped 11-year-old starting his first year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry now he's an earnest young hero who squares off against the evil-nosed Voldemort with humility and grit.ДЇollowers of J.K. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2' is the epic and impassioned close that the saga deserves, a sweeping Wagnerian finish that's taut with suspense and wet with emotion. Well done, Harry! You've saved the best for last.
